Just received a purfling and binding cutter from China through Ebay. Cost $33 incl postage.
Fitted with double cutters, (+ 2 spare under the bottom screw) - intended for violin purlings. They would need a bit of work as they are double bevelled.

Solid brass, 100 mm long (4") overall, pretty hefty at 210 grammes (nearly 8 oz).
The Schneider Gramil blade is for comparison.

Was not sure if it was useable as supplied or could be modified easily to use for guitar binding and purfling ledges.
Looks like I'll have to drill another through hole at 90 degrees to the existing one to get a cut opposite the flat, as well as the curved, side.

If I want to use the hock blade, I'll have to enlarge the blade holding mortice a bit and it should be ready to go - needs widened by 1.5 mm (1/16")

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Turn the blades round and single bevel the new end to see how it goes, and maybe flatten the points on the d/bevels so you don't slice your fingers.

Smart thinking Batman! Good idea, especially blunting the point. No good watching the sharp end when another one can come up and bites you in the backside as it were.
Thanks Kamusur / Steve.

I bought one of those from international luthiers supply in 1989. Never did figure how to operate it as the blades were for cutting channels for violin purflings. Unfortunately the channel it cut was way to wide to fit the purfling. I just put it aside. It's around here somewhere. Maybe I'll get it out and just look at it. Lol
